Ben Stokes to retire soon? England captain takes coaching gig after drawn Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

After an injury in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, England skipper Ben Stokes assumed a new role as mentor of the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

England Test skipper Ben Stokes has had frequent injuries in his career, as a result of which he took early retirement from white-ball cricket - although he made a U-turn. He continues to prioritize the longest format of the game for England.

After suffering a blow in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, India was relieved as England's most threatening pacer in the series was ruled out of the 5th Test. Batting against Stokes proved to be a challenge for the Indian batters in the series, while they have tackled all other bowlers with ease.

Ben Stokes ruled himself out of the 5th Test

Ben Stokes was in stellar form with the bat and the ball in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, as he led England to a 2-1 lead in the series. The captaincy passed from Stokes to Ollie Pope for the final Test, as the star all-rounder was ruled out due to an injury.

The series was a masterclass performance from the 34-year-old English skipper, who scored a Test hundred following a gap of nearly 2 years and picked up 17 wickets in the series as well, ending as the third highest in the series.

The intensity of his performance in the Manchester Test had a heavy toll on his body, as he suffered from another strain to his already injured hamstring, which had kept him out of the game for several months, and now injured his shoulder as well due to the long spells he delivered in the series.

“I came down [to the Oval] this morning to give myself every chance just to play as a batter – bowling was ruled out as soon as we got the scan results," Ben Stokes said.

Ben Stokes is in an observatory role for the Northern Superchargers

After being ruled out of the 5th Test at The Oval, England Test skipper Ben Stokes will be seen in a new role, as the mentor of the Northern Superchargers side, a team he was part of before withdrawing from the upcoming edition of The Hundred.

The Durham all-rounder has played only 5 games for the Northern Superchargers in all the seasons of The Hundred. He has scored only 14 runs and has picked 5 wickets in the 100-ball tournament, while he last featured in the IPL back in 2024.

Stokes, during his rehabilitation process, will be overseeing the Northern Superchargers as their mentor. The side is captained by English white-ball skipper Harry Brook and coached by former all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.

“You will see me knocking about the Hundred, not in a playing way, I had to make a decision in January if I would participate in the comp, but that was after my hamstring surgery."
