Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) hopes of bringing Washington Sundar on board have hit a roadblock, as Gujarat Titans (GT) have reportedly turned down their trade request for India’s off-spin all-rounder ahead of the upcoming IPL 2026 auction.

After Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement from the game, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is eager to bring in an off-spinner who could also be a handy batter, and Washington Sundar seems to be a perfect fit. Given that CSK had set their sights on Sundar to bolster their spin attack for the IPL 2026.

With Ravindra Jadeja likely to be part of a big swap deal with the Rajasthan Royals involving Sanju Samson, CSK is actively searching for a reliable Indian spinner to keep their spin-heavy legacy intact. Currently, the only established spinner in CSK’s setup is Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad.

The franchise was hoping to bring in Sundar, who made his early IPL mark under Stephen Fleming’s guidance during his stint with Rising Pune Supergiants, but the Gujarat Titans are not ready to leave the Indian all-rounder. Notably, Sundar was signed by GT for INR 3.2 crore before the 2025 season.

Gujarat Titans turn down CSK’s offer

As reported by The Indian Express, the Gujarat Titans “rejected” the CSK’s offer for Washington Sundar. They had approached the franchise, but the GT have no interest in parting ways with the off-spinner despite him playing only six matches for them in the IPL 2025.

But Sundar’s performances for India across formats have strengthened his reputation as a dependable all-rounder. His improved batting, particularly during the T20I series in Australia, has turned him into a complete modern-day asset.

Gujarat is reportedly looking at Washington Sundar as a player who can bowl in multiple phases of the innings and provide flexibility with the bat. With only a few quality Indian spin-bowling all-rounders available in the market, the Gujarat Titans are not ready to lose him, especially when overseas options are limited due to the rules.

Washington Sundar’s all-round brilliance in IPL

Notably, Sundar has quietly built an impressive record in the IPL over the years. With an economy rate of under 8, the Indian all-rounder has taken 39 wickets in 66 matches, which is outstanding considering he often bowls during the powerplay, one of the toughest phases for any bowler.
