Bizarre Scenes! Watch: Brisbane Heat Receive 5-run Penalty After Amelia Kerr Catches Ball With Towel

The ongoing edition of the Women’s Big Bash League saw a bizarre moment taking place. During the game between Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat, Amelia Kerr and her team were penalized with 5 runs due to an error made by her. 

During the the 10th over of the Sydney Sixers over. Ashleigh Gardner played the delivery from Amelia Kerr towards long-on for a single. The sweeper there picked up the ball and threw it towards the non-striker. Things seemed pretty normal but the umpire noticed one thing and it caught the attention of many. 

Amelia Kerr grabbed the ball with one towel in her hand and it didn’t go well with the umpire. The match official awarded five runs to Sydney Sixers. Here’s the video of the incident: 

As per the rule 28.2.1.2 “it is illegal if a fielder “extends his/ her clothing with his/ her hands and uses this to field the ball”. 

The mistake proved costly for the Brisbane Heat as Maitlan Brown (21*) and Mathilda Carmichael (28*) took Sydney Sixers over the finish line and took the team home. They won the game with one ball to spare and kept their hopes alive for the final. 

Sydney Sixers Women win the game against Brisbane Heat by 6 wickets 

Sydney Sixers women opted to field first and it was a decent effort from their end. They picked early wickets and left Brisbane Heats tumbling at 34/3. However, after that, Amelia Kerr (64)  played a vital knock for the team and Mignon du Preez (42) also chipped as they posted a total of 176 runs on the board. For sixers, Ellyse Perry picked three wickets. 

Chasing the target, Sydney Sixers were off to a decent start as Ellyse Perry (20) and Suzie Bates (26) gave the team a vital start. After that, Ashleigh Gardener (36) and Erin Burns (35) chipped in before Maitlan Brown (21*) and Mathilda Carmichael (28*) took the team home.
