Team India all-rounder Axar Patel sustained some damage to his finger while fielding during the second ODI of the three-match series against Australia at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. The left-arm spinner had a reprieve to Australia batter Matthew Short off Nitish Kumar Reddy's bowling on Thursday, October 23.

Team India scored 264 runs for the loss of 9 wickets after being asked to bat first. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana provided early breakthroughs for the team. Travis Head and Australia captain Mitchell Marsh failed to make an impact with the bat as the home team was reduced to 54/2 in 12.2 overs.

Nitish Kumar Reddy bowled a short delivery outside off stump to Matthew Short, who responded with a powerful slash toward Axar. And the ball struck Axar’s left thumb as he attempted the catch.

The deflection allowed the batters to take a run. Following the incident, Axar, who was visibly in pain, had to leave the field to receive treatment for his injured hand.

Axar Patel Returns to Field and Takes Crucial Wicket for India

However, Axar Patel returned to the field after a short break and delivered a crucial wicket by dismissing Matt Renshaw on the fourth ball of the 22nd over. The left-arm spinner floated a loopy delivery that drifted in the air.

Renshaw attempted to charge down the pitch and hit the ball over mid-off but misjudged the flight. The delivery dipped and spun past the outside edge, striking the middle and leg stumps. The left-hander scored 30 runs off 30 balls, including one four and one six, leaving Australia at 109/3.

At the time of writing, Australia were at 163/4 after 33 overs, with Matthew Short on 61 and Connolly on 21. The hosts still required 102 runs from the remaining 17 overs to complete the chase.

India Post 264/9 After Being Asked to Bat First in Adelaide

After being asked to bat first, India endured a shaky start in the second ODI as Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli departed cheaply. Gill managed just 9 runs, while Kohli was dismissed without scoring, leaving India under early pressure.

Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer then rebuilt the innings. Rohit scored 73 runs off 97 balls with seven boundaries and two sixes, while Iyer added 61 runs off 77 balls. The batting duo put together a crucial 118-run partnership for the third wicket.

Axar Patel contributed a valuable 44-run knock, while Harshit Rana played an important cameo at the end, remaining unbeaten on 24 runs. India posted a total of 264/9 in their allotted 50 overs.

Arshdeep Singh provided the first breakthrough for India, dismissing Australian captain Mitchell Marsh for 11 off 24 balls in the eighth over. Harshit Rana then sent back Travis Head for 28 off 40 deliveries.
