The governing council of the Bangladesh Premier League has called for a meeting with Chattogram Challengers following the debatable removal of Mehidy Hasan Miraz as captain. Mehidy was removed as captain ahead of the side’s fifth game in the ongoing BPL season against Sylhet Sunrisers.

Mehidy was all set to leave the camp after his removal as captain. He also cited that franchise’s CEO, Yasir Alam, calling him the ‘biggest culprit’ behind the debacle. Challengers coach Paul Nixon meanwhile left for the UK on Saturday morning following an emergency call from his county side Leicestershire. He was also in favour of Miraz’s removal as captain to play him as an all-rounder.

”We have heard about the incident yesterday. We have discussed among ourselves in a meeting that included our CEO and Mallick bhai (BPL GC member-secretary) and during the discussion, we found out that both parties are at fault,” Governing Council chairman Sheikh Sohel told reporters on Monday, January 31.

‘Miraz (Mehedy) should not have done what he did during the tournament being a national player. He should not have acted in such a manner and could have waited as we have a disciplinary committee,” he said.

Governing Council chairman Sheikh Sohel further said that the BPL franchise will not be spared for the way they have treated an international cricketer from Bangladesh.

The franchise also have a problem and we won’t spare the franchise. We will have a hearing in the coming days and we will call both parties. The franchise should have been more patient and could have sorted out the matter by talking among themselves and making an understanding. This matter should not have gone this far,” asserted Sohel.

Meanwhile, the franchise has been able to convince Miraz to continue playing after he was all set to go back to Dhaka. However, he stated that he is not interested in taking up captaincy anymore if the team’s chief operating officer Yasir Ali is around.

“I will say later (why I am not willing to play) and leaving. The mindset to play any game is not there right now,” Mehidy told reporters at the doorsteps of Peninsula, accusing the official of issuing a false statement.
