Gautam Gambhir ignored again as former World Cup winner credits MS Dhoni for 2011 World Cup six

Recently, when Suresh Raina was questioned on whether MS Dhoni sealed the World Cup win for India with the six or if he too agrees with several others, like Gautam Gambhir, on the fact that the World Cup was not won by one single six, he came up with an interesting response.

There has often been this misconception regarding the credit for the 2011 World Cup final win; while some impart the credit totally to MS Dhoni for his stupendous 91-run innings and the last-ball match-winning six at the Wankhede, some often say that Gautam Gambhir, with his crucial 97, had anchored them to a strong position.

However, whatever the cause of the win may be, the ICT fans celebrated India's second ICC World Cup title in the 50-over format after a long wait of 28 years since they first won it back in 1983 and missed it very closely in the finals of 2003. Dhoni was chosen as the player of the match by the ICC officials, sidelining the efforts of Gautam Gambhir.

Suresh Raina blasts Gautam Gambhir with "Ek Chakke ne to jitya hai"

Former Indian batter Suresh Raina made a recent appearance on the Shubhankar Mishra podcast, where he opined on several aspects of the game as well and was questioned by the host on his views on India's 2011 World Cup win.

"After winning the World Cup, we, as fans, have heard about a rivalry within the team. A lot of statements came. It continues till today. I have seen people ask you in interviews that ek chakke ne jitya ya nahi jitya," said Shubhankar.

"Chakke ne to jitaya hai, sab ko pata hai woh. (We won after that six, everyone knows that)," Raina answered with ease. He clearly took away any fame from Gautam Gambhir and singularly credited the humongous six for the World Cup triumph.

However, Suresh Raina also stressed the fact that whoever is to be credited for the win, Gautam Gambhir or Dhoni, India won the World Cup, and it was a moment of glory. The win was dedicated to the great Sachin Tendulkar, who had played six World Cups in his career but couldn't win any; it was a triumph for every member of the squad.

"The Indian team won the World Cup, irrespective of what anyone says. All the players know that this World Cup was for Team India, for the ones who prayed for us, and for Sachin paaji, who has played six World Cups but not won even one."

"It was for our coach, the support staff, Manek Kaka (masseur), trainers, doctors, captain, vice-captain, and for our childhood coaches," he added.

Suresh Raina credits Yuvraj Singh for World Cup triumph

Sidelining Gautam Gambhir or MSD, Raina went on to take pride in Yuvraj Singh, the veteran all-rounder, for being the main reason behind India's performance in the World Cup. The player was also awarded the man of the tournament; however, it was later discovered that he suffered from cancer during the ICC tournament.

"The whole tournament was good, but I think we won the tournament because of Yuvraj Singh. The way he batted, the way he fielded and the way he gave a lot of breakthroughs. Later, we came to know that he had cancer. Hats off to the guy; he became the Man of the Tournament as well."

Raina has also thanked the great Sachin Tendulkar for siding with him, which led Dhoni to keep him in the side for the Quarter-Final clash against Australia.

"It is like this (being underrated) in the middle overs, unless you hit a century or a fifty. But I was very thankful to Sachin Paaji for speaking to Mahi bhai. Mahi bhai told me that I was playing in the quarter-final. The match against Australia was a very important one because they had already won for so many years."
