Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar believes that India did the right thing by giving Rohit Sharma the captaincy in white-ball formats and hopes that the Mumbaikar can maintain his fitness throughout the season.

Rohit has taken over from Virat Kohli, who stepped down as the T20I captain before being sacked as the ODI captain. With two big tournaments – 2022 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup – coming up, all eyes are on Rohit and co.

I think it’s a good thing and the right thing to do – to have one captain for white-ball format and now Rohit actually can fly.

“So, the challenge for Rohit Sharma – in my opinion – is to stay fit and play everything that is there, from now to the World Cup in white-ball cricket, because you want the captain – that was one of Virat Kohli’s strengths or MS Dhoni before that, they rarely missed games, and both were very fit,” Agarkar said on the Star Sports show, ‘Gameplan’.

Very keen to see how the bowlers go – Ajit Agarkar marks the weak area for the team

Heading into the South Africa ODI series, the bowling attack was considered strong. However, an average outing in all three ODIs that India lost has confirmed that the team needs to start testing new options in white-ball cricket.

They are looking at options, that’s a good thing because clearly, India needed options. Very keen to see how the bowlers go because, which wasn’t the case, it is certainly a weak area for the Indian team.”

I don’t think you can rely on one or two guys, whether it is a Bumrah or a Shami. You need depth, there is enough depth but you need to give people opportunities. I think that’s what they are looking at,” Agarkar added.

India will face West Indies in the white-ball series that begins on February 6.
