The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have named Rajat Patidar as their eighth captain to lead the franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). On this special occasion for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) took a dig at Patidar’s announcement as captain.

RCB decided to part ways with Faf du Plessis by not retaining him for IPL 2025. There was speculation that Virat Kohli could return as captain, but the franchise confirmed Rajat Patidar as the skipper. Patidar was one of only three players retained by RCB, alongside Kohli and Yash Dayal, before the auction.

Patidar has played 27 matches for RCB, amassing 799 runs at a strike rate of 158.84 and an average of 34.73. He has smashed one century and seven fifties. In 2024, he scored 395 runs with five half-centuries at a strike rate of 177.13. He went unsold in the 2022 auction and later joined RCB as a replacement player.

Chennai Super Kings Take Dig at RCB After Rajat Patidar’s Announcement

RCB fans were excited about Rajat Patidar becoming the new captain, but their biggest rivals, the Chennai Super Kings, caused a stir with a surprising social media post.

The Chennai Super Kings took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share a picture of MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Suresh Raina, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, captioned "4️⃣ Captains. ♾ aura! 💛✨." This post has sparked frustration among RCB fans, while Chennai fans view it as playful banter aimed at RCB.

It started when Ruturaj Gaikwad made a cheeky remark about a microphone malfunction that went viral, saying, "Might be someone from RCB." Following Gaikwad's dismissal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 semifinal, RCB's social media admin took the opportunity to playfully dig at the CSK skipper.

Rajat Patidar Has Been with RCB Since 2021

Patidar has been with RCB since 2021, and this will be his first time captaining the team in the IPL. The right-handed batter has shown strong leadership skills. He guided Madhya Pradesh to the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024, where they suffered defeat to Mumbai, led by Shreyas Iyer.

He also led his team in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, leading RCB presents a unique challenge due to the massive expectations of its passionate fanbase. The added pressure of RCB’s continued pursuit of its first IPL title makes Patidar's role even more demanding as he steps into the captaincy.

Rajat Patidar Will Become the 4th Indian Player to Captain RCB

Rajat Patidar will become the fourth Indian player to captain Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. RCB, who’ve been part of the league since 2008, previously had Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and Virat Kohli as their Indian skippers.

The franchise has experimented with several overseas captains, including Shane Watson, Kevin Pietersen, Daniel Vettori, and Faf du Plessis. However, RCB has not been able to secure an IPL title despite these leadership changes. They will be hoping to end their ICC drought in the upcoming season.
