The 2021 T20 World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand triggered racial abuse towards England seamer Chris Jordan on social media, he has admitted. The right-arm speedster claimed that he was blamed for England’s defeat in the crucial match.

Jordan had a strong start to the competition, but his performance declined as it went on. In their five-wicket loss to New Zealand in the semifinal, the pacer from Barbados was England’s most expensive bowler, giving up 31 runs in three overs without taking a wicket.

The 33-year-old said in a video created by Royal London and the ECB that some social media users blamed him for the defeat and sent him racist direct messages.

“Things did not go our way six months ago in the World Cup semifinal. Because we had lost a World Cup game, there were several racist comments on my images and in my direct messages on Twitter and Instagram. Social media was unrelenting for me. People believed that I had a significant influence on that.”

The 33-year-old praised players like Eoin Morgan and Joe Root for making England’s locker room one of the most inclusive and varied in all of cricket.

“In my opinion, the current England team is as diversified as they come. I am confident that I made some excellent, lifelong friends in that locker room.”

“The fact that our changing room is one of the most diversified in international cricket is a testament to individuals like Eoin Morgan and Joe Root. As some people are simply unaware, true change will only come from within and through genuine talks. It concerns ongoing education.”

Chris Jordan, who led England in T20I wickets, is still one of their top bowlers in the competition. Later this year, he will probably make it into their T20 World Cup team.
