The next day after BCCI’s squad announcement for their T20I series against England, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) declared their squad for the Twenty20 International series on Monday, June 22.
Harry Brook remains the captain of the T20Is for the England cricket team, with Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, and Phil Salt as the experienced candidates in the team. While uncapped all-rounder James Coles has been called up for the high-profile series, Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton missed out due to injury.
ECB omits top talents for England vs India T20I series
The England Men’s selection panel has named a 17-player squad for the Vitality IT20 series against India. Uncapped all-rounder James Coles has been called up to an England Men’s squad for the first time,” the ECB informs in its official announcement.
“Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker, and Saqib Mahmood return, having not been a part of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton are unavailable due to injury,” it added.
Why does the ECB announce a 17-member team?
In an official release on their website, the ECB mentioned that James Coles has been picked up for the series because of his promising performances during the past 12 months across the T20 tournaments. As the hosts will straightaway enter into the preparations for the series against India, the board has named an extended squad to stay flexible under any circumstances.
"James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place following his performances with the England Lions and in T20 competitions here and abroad during the past 12 months."
"We have selected a larger squad to accommodate the fact that this series will begin shortly after the Test series against New Zealand is due to conclude, which allows us to be flexible," Marcus North, England Men’s National Selector, said.
