"Commitment to represent the country..." - VVS Laxman's huge verdict on BCCI central contracts
The BCCI annual central contracts were announced yesterday and they have made some ground-breaking changes in the central contracts. Former India cricketer and junior national team coach VVS Laxman has praised the BCCI for prioritizing domestic cricket with their decision to make it compulsory for players to play domestic cricket if they are fit and not in the Team India squad at the time. BCCI also added the one-of-a-kind fast bowler contract to help budding pacers in their journey.
VVS Laxman has been the head coach of the India’s Under-19 national team since 2022. India has won the Under-19 World Cup in 2022 under him and he is expected to succeed Rahul Dravid for the senior men’s national team’s head coach position.
The BCCI has excluded Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the central contracts following their negligence of the Ranji Trophy and domestic games. Ishan Kishan opted out of the Test series against South Africa and since then he was out of action until his very recent participation in the DY Patil T20 Cup.
Shreyas Iyer was also asked to play Ranji Trophy after he was dropped from the final three Tests against England after his poor performance in the first two Tests of the series.

However, Iyer also ignored the BCCI notification until tomorrow when he was removed from the central contracts. It is reported that Shreyas Iyer is expected to play in the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai against Tamil Nadu. VVS Laxman took to ‘X’ to tweet about the BCCI contracts announced yesterday.
“It’s great to see that commitment to represent the country in the largest format of the game and emphasis to keep oneself match-ready by playing domestic cricket is being prioritised through the BCCI annual contracts. A wonderful move too to award contracts to budding fast bowlers so that they can operate without insecurities hanging over their heads,” tweeted VVS Laxman.

VVS Laxman also praised BCCI’s decision to introduce fast-bowling contracts that will help budding fast bowlers focus on their game without any pressure. The five pacers included in this contract this year are Umran Malik, Akash Deep, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Vidwath Kaverappa, and Yash Dayal. Akash Deep and Umran Malik have made their debut for India whereas Vijaykumar Vyshak, Vidwath Kaverappa, and Yash Dayal are yet to make their debut for the national team.
India is currently hosting England for a five-match Test series where India has already sealed the series by taking an unassailable lead of 3-1. The hosts lost the first Test in Hyderabad by 28 runs but then went on to win three consecutive Tests to seal the series. The fifth and final Test of the series will be played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
