Legendary India opener Sunil Gavaskar has been in the news recently for his bold and controversial comments in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gavaskar has grabbed the headlines once again at the end of the Test series.

Australia won the final Test match in Sydney to clinch the series 3-1. During the post-match presentation, Australia captain Pat Cummins received the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from the legendary Australian cricketer Allan Border.

While Border was present to hand over the trophy to Australia, Gavaskar was watching from the sidelines. He clapped as Cummins received the trophy before the other Australian players joined their skipper for celebrations.

Sunil Gavaskar slams Cricket Australia

Later, Gavaskar was asked about his absence from the post-match presentation ceremony. He claimed that he would have loved to be there at the presentation since the trophy is named after him as well.

“I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by Code Sports.

Gavaskar further blasted Cricket Australia for the decision to ignore him from the ceremony since he is an Indian. Cricket Australia had earlier planned that Gavaskar would present the trophy only if the series ended in a 2-2 draw and India retained the trophy but if Australia win the series, it will be Allan Border to hand it over.

“I mean, I am here on the ground. To me it should not matter that Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s fine. Just because I am an Indian (I did not present the trophy). I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border,” the legendary India batter added.

Cricket Australia replies to Sunil Gavaskar's remarks

Replying to Sunil Gavaskar's comments, Cricket Australia cleared its stance and admitted that it would have been a preferable option to have both the legends on the same stage to hand over the trophy.

"We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been on the stage," Cricket Australia stated.

While Cricket Australia has given a statement, they preferred not to give any specific reason to justify Gavaskar's omission from the stage. Gavaskar was with the commentary panel during the trophy presentation and only left after all the work was completed.

Australia regain Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Meanwhile, Australia completed a famous win in Sydney and retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade. Australia had last won the trophy way back in 2014-25 season when they defeated India 2-0 at home.

Since that win, India and Australia have faced each other four times - twice in India and twice in Australia. India won all the series with a 2-1 margin which also included two historic Test series wins in 2018-19 and 2020-21, both on Australian soil.
