Ahead of the 2021/22 home summer of cricket, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that it will be conducting the West Indies Professional Cricketers Draft on Tuesday, May 25 via video call.

The territorial Board Franchises will be convened to pick the final two players for their respective squads for the upcoming domestic season which included the Super50 Cup and the West Indies Championship.

The draft will be conducted over two rounds and in each round, the franchises will have to pick one player from a pool of around 100 cricketers.

The two players selected by the franchises after the completion of two rounds will complete their respective 15-member squad our of 13 were pre-selected.

For the upcoming season, each franchise will be allotted a pick number according to their standing in the last West Indies Championship which was held in 2019/20.

Each franchise will be allotted a total of 90 seconds to make their respective picks and if they fail to make it within the allotted period, then they will have to wait until all the other franchises have picked their players.

Once all the franchises have made their respective picks across two rounds, a total of 90 cricketers across six franchises will be retained on a full-time contract for the next 12 months.

“The draft, now in its eighth (8th) year, demonstrates that CWI remains committed to our professional cricket structure and system, even in these times of uncertainty from the COVID-19 pandemic. The ninety (90) regional players who will be awarded regional franchise contracts, will be able to train and practice professionally as CWI hopes for a return to normalcy in regional cricket later this year,” said Cricket West Indies’ Cricket Operations Manager, Roland Holder.

Each draft pick by the franchise selection committee will be monitored and recorded by the draft overseer, as notified by Cricket West Indies to the franchises.
