The inaugural edition of the Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) T20 league, SA20, which is a six-team tournament, is all set to commence on January 10 next year.
All six teams in SA20 have been acquired by current Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners. The owners of Mumbai Indians have bought the Cape Town franchise, Lucknow Super Giants owners have purchased the Durban franchise and Chennai Super Kings owners have bought the Johannesburg franchise.
Also, Sunrisers Hyderabad owners have bought the Gqeberha franchise, Rajasthan Royals owners have acquired the Paarl franchise and Delhi Capitals co-owners have acquired the Pretoria franchise.
Meanwhile, each squad in CSA’s new T20 league consists of 17 players – with a maximum of seven overseas players. In total 33 games are set to be played in the inaugural edition of SA20 as teams will play each other twice – on a home-and-away basis – followed by two semi-finals and the final.
Can’t wait for the action to start – Johannesburg Super Kings assistant coach in SA20 Albie Morkel
The assistant coach of the Johannesburg Super Kings, Albie Morkel, said that the player auction of CSA’s new T20 league, which was held on September 19, was a huge success for Johannesburg Super Kings as well as the SA20 league.
“The player auction was a huge success for us as Jo’burg Super Kings and for the league itself,” he said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
“There were a lot of quality local and international cricketers picked up and that will certainly produce competitive cricket from the teams …We have already started doing work behind the scenes and can’t wait for the action to start come January 10th.”
The general manager of MI Cape Town, Robin Peterson, said that the new T20 league will have a massive impact on South African cricket. He also said that the T20 league will revolutionise the game in the country. He stated:
“The SA20 is going to have a massive impact on South African cricket. It is going to revolutionise the game in our country and if used correctly and to its full potential, it will be an exciting competition.
“Being on the ground working at domestic level, there is a certain level of excitement from cricketers that there is a league within our own country. There’s knowing that if they showcase their skills, who knows where it may lead to, be it playing for the Proteas or getting deals around the world.”
