In a thrilling IPL 2024 encounter between the Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR), controversy erupted over the dismissal of RR captain Sanju Samson at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday, May 7.

The controversial moment transpired when Delhi Capitals’ (DC) batter Shai Hope grabbed a catch at the long-off boundary, resulting in Samson having to return to the pavilion after playing a stunning knock of 86 runs off 46 balls at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

However, the way Hope completed Samson’s catch has sparked a heated debate among the cricket fraternity, and now former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer has given his verdict on the controversy. Actually, Hope appeared to have cleanly caught the ball, but there were doubts regarding whether his foot had touched the boundary line during the process.

Wasim Jaffer slams umpires over Sanju Samson's dismissal

Unfortunately, the lack of convincing evidence led Samson to lose his wicket, igniting a storm of controversy on social media. Sharing his thoughts on the RR skipper’s wicket, Navjot Singh Sidhu said on Star Sports that Samson should have been adjudged not out, as Hope's foot made contact with the boundary rope on two separate occasions during the catch.

However, Jaffer had a different take on Samson’s wicket against the DC. The cricket expert admitted that the evidence was not inconclusive, but he criticized the third umpire's decision-making process. He claimed that the third umpire announced his decision in a hurry; instead, he should have waited for additional camera angles before making the final call.

Wasim Jaffer was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo: “With the replays that we saw, I felt he was out. The foot didn't touch the rope. There wasn't conclusive evidence. There was an international umpire there. Shai Hope also said that, although obviously, the fielder will say that only. But overall, with how it looked, I felt that was out.

They should've taken more time. I'm surprised at how quickly they decided. It was a very important moment in the match. RR's win depended on that. You could've looked at it with 2-3 more angles or a super slow-motion, too. I felt they took a decision in a hurry.”

RR can still make it to the top of the IPL 2024 points table

If Samson was given the lifeline, then the RR skipper could have easily won the game, as the hosts DC secured a 20-run over the Royals to climb to the fifth spot in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points from 12 games that they have played so far in the lucrative T20 league.

However, despite the loss to DC, RR remained in the second spot on the standings with 16 points from 11 games and have almost booked their place in the IPL 2024 playoffs. However, the Royals still have three games left in the ongoing IPL 2024 before the knockouts, and they can still displace the table-topper Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to make it to the qualifiers.

RR will next face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 12 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, and then Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 15 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, where they will also play their final league game against KKR on May 19.
