The English test side has been struggling in recent times having won just 1 game in their last 12 tests. Darren Gough on TalkSport said that England’s skipper Root tried to convince Shane Warne to take up England’s coaching role before the 2021-2022 Ashes.

Shane Warne Was Very Close To Taking Up The Role

Shane Warne was arguably Australia’s greatest cricketer after Sir Donald Bradman. Warne had more than 700 test wickets and over 1000 international wickets. He died of a suspected heart attack in a luxury hotel in Thailand last month while on a vacation. It sent shock waves to the entire cricketing fraternity.

As per some reports last month, Warne was close to taking up England’s coaching role. Gough though said that Warne was hesitant to take up the role earlier because of his loyalty to Australia.

But in a recent interview with Isha Guha former Australian captain and a close friend of Warne, Ricky Ponting revealed that Warne was very close to taking up the job.

“His passion and knowledge for the game is something to behold. He would have made a great coach. Having someone like Warne to take over the England cricket team, I think he would have done a terrific job,” former Australia captain Ricky Ponting had told fellow broadcaster, Isa Guha, on ‘The ICC Review’.

Darren Gough also confirmed that just after the Ashes Warne asked for Root’s number which made Gough believe that Warne was very very close to taking up the role, but as it stands it couldn’t happen.

After England’s loss to the West Indies in the Test series, there have been calls for Joe Root to step down as the captain. But Root has also made it clear that he loves the job and would like to continue. Root holds the record for leading England to most wins as captain. But he also holds the record for most losses as England captain. He has 27 wins to his name, while he has lost 26 games.
