Former England captain Michael Vaughan has come to the defense of Australia opener David Warner amid a verbal exchange with Mitchell Johnson. Vaughan expressed support for a fairytale ending for Warner if he manages to play his last Test on his home ground.

Before the Ashes 2023, Warner announced his intention to retire from Tests after the third match against Pakistan. Mitchell Johnson questioned the idea of granting Warner a hero’s send-off, considering his involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

David Warner Is A Great Of The Game – Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan described David Warner as a great of the game despite controversies in his career. Vaughan acknowledged Warner’s past achievements, endorsing the idea of a memorable conclusion to his Test career.

“I do think David Warner is a great of the game. Because of what’s happened and because Dave’s had some controversy in his career, I think there’s some people who won’t give him that mantle and won’t talk about him in those lights. But you only have to look at his record. His record in World Cups,” Vaughan told the Daily Telegraph.

“There’s not many players who get the fairytale ending but you would say David Warner if he gets through to that last Test, which I’d back him to do so, he’s earned the right to have that fairytale send-off on his home ground,” he further stated.

The left-handed opening batter has amassed impressive achievements in his cricket career, playing 109 Tests. He has scored 8,487 runs at an average of 44.43, featuring 25 centuries and 36 half-centuries.

It Wouldn’t Be A Summer Without A Headline – David Warner

During a broadcaster event in Sydney, David Warner, known for his career marked by controversies, acknowledged another headline preceding his farewell series. The veteran batter stated that everyone is entitled to their opinions.

“It wouldn’t be a summer without a headline would it. It is what it is. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But moving forward, looking forward to a nice Test over in the West,” Warner said.

The first Test of the Australia-Pakistan Test series is scheduled to take place in Perth on Thursday, December 14. The upcoming three-match series will be crucial for the team as it is part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.
