England veteran Stuart Broad will bring down the curtains on his glorious career at the end of the ongoing fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2023. At the end of the third day’s play, the fast bowler announced that he would bid goodbye to international cricket after the ongoing game.
Tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the world for one of the most decorated bowlers in the history of Test cricket. And Australia batting coach Michael di Venuto has also given his tribute to Stuart Broad although with a hilarious comment. The Australia coach has said that opening batsman David Warner is keen to play a few more Ashes series following the England great’s retirement,
David Warner has endured a tough time in the recent Ashes series because of Stuart Broad. The right-arm pacer has dismissed Warner 17 times in Tests so far. Stuart Broad has troubled the Australia opener in the ongoing series too as the latter finds himself under immense pressure to deliver with the bat in the ongoing fifth and final Test.
Australia coach on Stuart Broad’s retirement:
With David Warner’s arch nemesis finally retiring from Tests, Michael de Venuto came up with a hilarious comment. He also stated that the veteran opener has tried to remain positive in the ongoing series and rued his unfortunate dismissals after getting good starts.
“I think he’s pretty keen to go on for a few more Ashes series now [hinting at Broad’s retirement]. On this tour he has looked to be positive most of the time on his feet. We have seen plenty of energy out of the crease. He has made some really good starts, and just generally made a poor decision when he has been dismissed.
“The way he has been playing, it has been a little out of character when he has been dismissed. So far in this innings he has looked really good, made some good decisions, and played really nicely,” the Australian coach said.
David Warner has made a good start with the bat in the second innings of the fifth Test. With Australia set a target of 384 runs, he and Usman Khawaja have shared an unbeaten stand of 135 runs so far. Warner was on 58 while Khawaja was 69 as rain brought an early end to the day’s proceedings. A draw or a win in the ongoing game will see Australia win the Ashes in England for the first time since 2001.
“There are a lot of guys who have been on Ashes series over here in the past and haven’t managed to win. Twenty years is a long time. We’re in a great position for some of the boys to get that on their resume. We’re all pretty keen to score those runs tomorrow [Monday]. This morning when we got our target we knew we had a long time to bat to score those runs,” he said.
