David Warner likely to be sacked as Sydney Thunder captain after drink-driving charge

David Warner has been one of the finest opening batters in world cricket. The former Australia opener has retired from international cricket; however, he continues to play franchise leagues in different parts of the world. Currently, Warner is playing in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 for the Karachi Kings, and was captaining the side as well.

Midway through the PSL, David Warner went back to Australia to spend some time with family. However, that turned out to be problematic for the Southpaw, as he was caught due to the drink and drive case. The Southpaw was charged by police after allegedly blowing more than twice the legal limit in a random breath test.

Sydney Thunder to evaluate David Warner's situation

Now, as the reports from DailyMail, Warner is expected to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on May 7. The development has put Cricket New South Wales (NSW) in a difficult position.

Especially considering Warner's leadership role with the Sydney Thunder and the franchise’s long history of supporting road safety programs. Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon respected the magnitude of the situation, but he refused to speak further due to pending legal processes.

"I can't say too much (about Warner's alleged drink-driving incident) because of the legal side of it. The allegations, of course, are concerning and we take them very seriously," Germon was quoted as saying by The West Australian.

"At Cricket NSW, we are strong advocates for safe driving, not drink-driving. We educate our players a lot in that area and we will support David through this process, knowing there's a court case coming up, but also look to educate our players even more on this really important matter," he added.

NSW and Thunder actively take part in road safety

Sydney Thunder and NSW are very active in the road safety campaigns and have been doing it for years. This also includes their annual fixture against Brisbane Heat, which is branded as the Road Safety Cup, a key campaign in partnership with government stakeholders.

David Warner was appointed as the captain back in 2018 after his ban for ball-tampering was lifted. Though, as per recent situations, the captaincy will be reviewed thoroughly, with the governing body set to decide on the matter.

"Bear in mind, at the moment they are allegations, and the Sydney Thunder captaincy will be worked through in due course," Germon said. Warner's leadership position remains under scrutiny, with Cricket NSW expected to conduct a serious review in the coming weeks.

David Warner to return against Islamabad United

David Warner returned to Pakistan for the Karachi Kings after a short vacation. However, as of April 11, 2026, he missed a match due to back pain, and South African batting star Reeza Hendricks replaced him in the last game against the Hyderabad Kingsmen.

The Aussie cricketer might be back in the next game tomorrow against Islamabad United. In the last match he featured for the Kings, he scored a half-century, and the Kings are in 4th position in the table, winning three games and losing two.
