The Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) played against the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 35th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Saturday, April 20, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
After being invited to bat first in the match, SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma destroyed the DC bowling unit. They registered the highest-ever powerplay score in the history of T20 cricket - 125/0.
Both the openers fell short of major milestones as Head got out for 89 and Sharma was cleaned up for 46. After losing the openers, SRH lost some quick wickets but Shahbaz Ahmed's terrific 59-run knock ensured that SRH once again breached the 250-run mark. They posted 266/7 on the board. For DC, Kuldeep Yadav with his 4-wicket haul was the top performer.
Chasing the target, Delhi Capitals openers failed to set a platform for the win. However, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel batted brilliantly with the former playing a stupendous knock of 65 runs in 18 balls. In the end, Rishabh Pant tried to put up a fight but it wasn't enough as DC got bundled out for 199 to lose the match by 67 runs. For SRH, T Natarajan was the top performer with his figures of 4/19.
At the post-match presentation ceremony, Pat Cummins highlighted the good record of SRH at Arun Jaitley Stadium as they defeated DC for 4th consecutive time at the venue. He also said that the bowlers struggled in the powerplay because there was not much for them on the surface. Pat Cummins said:
"Good record here. Another great game of cricket. You saw there wasn't much in the powerplay for both sets of bowlers. After that it slowed down, but overall a great batting wicket."
Pat Cummins while talking about the batting approach of SRH said that he is elated but worried too as he needs to bowl in such high-scoring matches. Pat Cummins elaborated:
"(No dew in chase?) Yes little bit of grip out there, that may be a factor. (On batters teeing off) Part of me is excited and elated, and part of me is worried that I'll have to bowl there [smile]. Really happy how we closed out the bowling. Everyone was disciplined in the field."
What Happened In Sunrisers Hyderabad's Previous Match Against Delhi Capitals?
The last time Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) locked horns with the Delhi Capitals (DC), they emerged victorious by 9 runs in the 40th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 on April 29 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Batting first, Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen batted brilliantly and smashed terrific half-centuries. Sharma smashed 67 runs, Klaasen blasted 53 runs and other batters chipped in well to help Team Hyderabad post a great total of 197/6 on the board. In the first innings, Mitchell Marsh shined with the ball for Delhi Capitals (DC) as he bagged 4 wickets while giving away just 27 runs in his 4-over quota.
Chasing the target, captain David Warner was cleaned up for a duck but Phil Salt (59) and Mitchell Marsh (63) kept Delhi Capitals in the hunt with their tremendous fifties. The middle and lower-order batters of DC weren't able to follow up on the performance of the top-order and despite Axar Patel's 14-ball 29 they got restricted to 188/6, allowing SRH to register a 9-run victory.
Although Delhi Capitals finished on the losing side, the Player of the Match award was handed to the star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh for his all-round brilliance [63 (39) & 4/27].
