Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta opined Deepak Chahar could become a valuable member of India’s white-ball teams going forward as an all-rounder. His comments came after Chahar produced an impressive all-round performance, in particular with the bat, on Tuesday in the second ODI versus Sri Lanka.
After picking up a couple of wickets, Chahar scored 69 unbeaten runs to take India over the finish line after the side was found reeling at 193-7. With Hardik Pandya still in process of recovery and not allowed to bowl a full quota of overs due to his back issues, Deep Dasgupta said Chahar will now onwards be seen as someone who will help the side in adding the batting depth.
“If India miss something in white-ball cricket, that is the presence of an all-rounder. Deepak Chahar has proved in this game that he can satisfy that role. This innings could be a turning point for how selectors look at him. He bowled well at the death and also batted well. If he improves, he can be the all-rounder as well that India needs,” Deep Dasgupta said in his YouTube video.
Deepak Chahar’s Batting Biggest Positive Of The Match: Deep Dasgupta
Deep Dasgupta was majorly impressed by Chahar’s maturity while facing the 48th over of Wanindu Hasaranga, Sri Lanka’s best bowler on the night. With still 15 runs required off 16 balls, Chahar safely played out four consecutive dot balls off Hasaranga. India then took 12 runs from the next over and the game was effectively sealed.
The cricketer-turned-commentator heaped praises on Chahar’s self-confidence and game awareness.
“The biggest positive to come out of this match has been Deepak Chahar’s batting. The way he batted, the maturity that he showed, especially by playing out Hasaranga’s 48th over, he knew this was his last over and there was no need to take a risk. That showed that he had a set game plan and was assured about his and his partner’s (Bhuvneshwar) ability,” Deep Dasgupta added.
