Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar justified his promotion in the Indian middle order with a fighting knock amid the disgusting collapse within the Indian batting order. He was seen in tears after India lost the match despite all his efforts in vain.

India lost the first Test against South Africa in a humiliating fashion after they failed to chase just 124 runs as the target in the final innings of the game. The Indians did not need to rush, as nearly 250 overs were left in the game. Despite that, the entire batting lineup collapsed like a house of cards.

None would have thought that the two-time WTC finalists, India, would have lost while chasing a modest target of 124 on their own home ground. Clearly, the Eden Gardens was not offering anything to the batters, yet the loss turned out to be devastating for India.

When the Indian top order collapsed on another occasion, Washington Sundar, the all-rounder promoted to bat at no. 3 for India, held his nerve to provide India with some resistance against the Indians. The batter got out as the 6th wicket fell for India.

India still had hopes with Axar Patel's short cameo, but when he got dismissed and Mohammed Siraj fell the very next ball, Sundar could not hold onto his tears as they burst as an expression of extreme sorrow.

India sank low after a Test loss against South Africa

South African skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bat first; they could manage only 159 runs in the innings, with Jasprit Bumrah being the best player on show for India. In return, India took a lead of just 30 runs, as KL Rahul remained the pick of the batters.

Washington Sundar, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja all got some convincing starts, yet they could not go past the half-century mark. The first half-century in the entire game came from Temba Bavuma, as he scored an unbeaten 55* in the second innings.

The Indian batting order, without the service of their captain, Shubman Gill, could not get past the score of 100 and went on to lose the game by a margin of 30 runs.

Simon Harmer was named the Player of the Match

South Africa, unlike India, had only 2 spinners in the Protea side, Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. Other than these two, even Aiden Markram bowled in as their third spinner.

Simon Harmer was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas, as he dismissed 8 batters out of the 18 wickets that fell in the two Indian innings, with their captain being retired hurt on both occasions.

Harmer's stunning effort with the ball turned effective, as he was named the Player of the Match for having restricted the home side to such low scores across both innings.
