New Zealand batsman Devon Conway justified his selection by playing an unbeaten knock of 99 in the first T20I against Australia in Christchurch. Devon Conway came to the crease when New Zealand were 11-2 after the visitors put them to bat first. The left-handed batsman’s knock of 99 off 59 balls earned praises from Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who lauded him via Twitter.
Devon Conway made his T20 international debut against the West Indies in November and has quickly established himself as the permanent member of the national team. The 29-year old played a much-required knock for New Zealand as the Kiwis found themselves in trouble and were 19-3 at one stage. Daniel Sams struck twice by removing Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson while Jhye Richardson dismissed Tim Seifert.
Conway and Glenn Phillips began the rescue act with a 74-run stand followed by the former sharing partnerships of 47 and 44* with James Neesham and Mitchell Santner too. New Zealand scored 129 off the last 11 overs as Conway carried them to a daunting 184. In response, Australia struggled early on as Tim Southee took two wickets in the powerplay.
Only Mitchell Marsh and Ashton Agar got to double figures as New Zealand skittled their Trans-Tasman rivals for a paltry score, scoring an emphatic victory by 53 runs to take the lead in the five-match rubber. Ish Sodhi was the pick of the bowlers as the leg-spinner ended with figures of 4-0-28-4. Nevertheless, Conway, who scored an unbeaten 99, earned the man of the match award.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s tweet for Devon Conway:
Ravichandran Ashwin, who has enjoyed his past few weeks in Test cricket, took to his official Twitter handle, claimed that Devon Conway is only four days late since the IPL 2021 auction ended. Ashwin acknowledged that the South African-born batsman played a magnificent knock. Unluckily, the southpaw could not find any buyers, entering the IPL 2021 auction at a base price of INR 50 lakhs.
