New Zealand batsman Devon Conway justified his selection by playing an unbeaten knock of 99 in the first T20I against Australia in Christchurch. Devon Conway made his T20 international debut against the West Indies in November and has quickly established himself as the permanent member of the national team. The 29-year old played a much-required knock for New Zealand as the Kiwis found themselves in trouble and were 19-3 at one stage. Daniel Sams struck twice by removing Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson while Jhye Richardson dismissed Tim Seifert.

Conway and Glenn Phillips began the rescue act with a 74-run stand followed by the former sharing partnerships of 47 and 44* with James Neesham and Mitchell Santner too. New Zealand scored 129 off the last 11 overs as Conway carried them to a daunting 184. In response, Australia struggled early on as Tim Southee took two wickets in the powerplay.

Ish Sodhi was the pick of the bowlers as the leg-spinner ended with figures of 4-0-28-4. Nevertheless, Conway, who scored an unbeaten 99, earned the man of the match award.
