New Zealand batsman Devon Conway is sprinkling kitty litter on practice pitches in order to simulate spin bowling on the rough as he prepares to counter the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship final.

Kitty litter is basically granulated clay that absorbs waste products of pets like dogs or cats.

Devon Conway, who had a stellar start to his international career in white-ball cricket during the home summer, has been named in the 20-men squad for the two-match Test series against England.

The squad will then be trimmed to 15 for the World Test Championship final which will take place in Southampton between June 18-22.

“Basically the idea is to get the ball to sort of spit out of the rough,” Devon Conway told New Zealand broadcaster Spark Sport.

“It’s a bit harder to play, but good practice. It’s about finding a game plan to combat that and just practice how you’re going to play in the game,” Conway added.

“When it does roughen up and the ball does spit and turn a lot, it’s all about being positive,” he said.

Conway further added that he just doesn’t want to rely on his defensive game while tackling the spinners.

“If you’re going to look to just defend throughout, at some point there might be a ball that’s going to have your number,” he added.
