Former Australian head coach Justin Langer has resigned from his position as head coach. On Saturday, February 05, he has confirmed his resignation to Cricket Australia after both did not come into an agreement regarding Langer’s future with the Australian cricket team.

Justin Langer was offered a short-term contract that would have seen the head coach stay on to defend Australia’s T20 World Cup at home in October-November. This happened after Australia won the T20 World Cup followed by the Ashes with the southpaw at the helm. However, Langer did not accept the offer and made the decision on stepping down from his role.

Meanwhile, several former Australian cricketers have criticised Cricket Australia for the way it has handled the activities that led to Justin Langer’s resignation. The former cricketers, many of which were his teammates hinted board mishandled the entire thing which led to one of the stepping down of one of Australia’s most successful coaches.

Mitchell Johnson also joined the bandwagon and extended his support towards Justin Langer. He said that the treatment meted out to Langer was disappointing to watch. He further said that this now puts Australian cricket’s future in a dark spot.

Johnson wrote on Instagram: “It is disrespectful & very disappointing how a great person in Justin Langer, a great icon of the game has been treated is an absolute mess! It doesn’t instil confidence in any future coach of the Australian cricket team if this is the way of the future.”

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley thanked Langer for restructuring Australian cricket post the infamous Sandpapergate scandal which rocked Australian cricket in 2018.

“Justin has been an outstanding coach of the Australian men’s team over the past four years. He has restored the trust in the team and his legacy is assured. We are extremely proud of his achievements since he took over in 2018, including the recent T20 World Cup victory and Ashes success. We are naturally disappointed Justin has decided against continuing as coach but respect his decision and wish him all the best in the future. I would like to sincerely thank Justin and also his family for all that they have given to Australian cricket over the past four years, for which we remain eternally grateful” Hockley said.
