Former South African spinner Robin Peterson believes that young batter Dewald Brevis should be part of the national team for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. Peterson stated that Brevis can make valuable contributions to the team in all three departments on Indian soil.

Dewald Brevis has yet to make his international debut for the national cricket team. The right-handed batter came into the limelight after his impressive batting in the U19 World Cup. He was instrumental in MI New York’s (MINY) title win in the inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket (MLC).

I Think He Can – Robin Peterson

The MI New York head coach described Dewald Brevis as a gifted cricketer, adding that players don’t necessarily have to play a lot of cricket before the World Cup.

“Can he go to the World Cup? Of course, I think he can. Guys don’t necessarily have to play a lot of cricket before going there. I mean we’re talking about a gifted cricketer who can field, can bowl leg-spin and has the power game to play spin in Indian conditions as well,” Peterson said.

“Dewald’s talent is unparalleled. He basically won that Eliminator (in the MLC) for us. You can now see the character is starting to develop alongside his talent. The closer those two merge, then we’re going to get a special player,” he added.

Brevis played a match-winning knock of 57 runs off 41 balls against the Washington Freedom in the Eliminator of the MLC 2023. MINY won the Eliminator by 16 runs and went on to beat the Seattle Orcas in the final to lift the inaugural trophy.

Dewald Brevis Impressed With His Batting Performances

Brevis was the highest run-scorer for South Africa in the 2021/22 Under-19 World Cup, amassing 506 runs in six games, including two centuries and three half-centuries. The right-handed batter scored 165 runs in five games at an average of 41.25 in the USA’s MLC 2023.

The 20-year-old cricketer represented the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and scored 161 runs in seven games with an average of 23 and a strike rate of 142.48. Although he was part of the MI team in the IPL 2023, he didn’t get a chance to play.
