Zimbabwe National Cricket Team captain Sikandar Raza opened up on the performance of his side in the first T20I of the three-match series against the India National Cricket Team on Thursday, July 23. India beat Zimbabwe by 7 wickets to win the first game and have a lead in the series 1-0.
Speaking after the loss, Sikandar Raza was not happy with the team’s performance and said the team failed to execute their plans in the first T20I at Harare. He praised the collective effort from the players and expressed confidence that Zimbabwe would look to bounce back in the second match of the series.
Mayank Yadav makes sensational comeback
India won the toss and elected to field first, as Ashok Sharma made his debut in this game and Mayank Yadav also came back into the side after two years. Sikandar Raza’s had a setback ahead of the match as Milton Shumba was ruled out of the series ahead of the first game.
Mayank Yadav had a brilliant comeback to the side, picking the wicket in the very first ball as Brian Bennett was dismissed for a golden duck. After that, the Men in Blue were in complete control of the game as the Chevrons lost wickets at regular intervals, and they were 5/64 at one stage.
Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav picked two wickets each and dismantled the batting of the home side. Ravi Bishnoi and Shivam Dube picked one wicket each as Zimbabwe scored 125/7 in their 20 overs.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scripts history in 1st T20I
While chasing, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gave India a solid start, but his partner Abhishek Sharma failed and was dismissed for 1 off 8 balls. But the15-year-old boy wonder did not stop, and he scored a fifty off 18 deliveries and became the youngest cricketer to smash a fifty at the age of 15 years and 118 days.
Later, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer stitched a 46-run partnership for the third wicket, as the Southpaw scored 35 runs and Iyer was unbeaten with the score of Shreyas Iyer on the score of 28 runs, and Tilak Varma scored 6 runs as India won the game comfortably with 40 balls to spare.
Sikandar Raza not happy with team's performance
Sikandar Raza stated that the conditions were tough to bat in as they did not hit many boundaries and felt that the wicket had some movement, which made it tougher for their batters. He feels that they need a more flat wicket to put runs on the board and to make a comeback in the series after winning the next match.
"I thought it remained tough with the new ball. Unfortunately, we didn't hit many boundaries up front as well, so the ball stayed new, and because of that, I felt the movement off the deck made batting even tougher," Sikandar Raza said in the post-match presentation.
Sikandar Raza said, "[Were conditions similar to what you've experienced recently?] I thought during the Bangladesh ODI series, there was a lot of moisture, and it remained there for a long time. Whereas today, I thought the moisture was there for the first eight to ten or even 12 overs, and apart from that, when India came out to bat, the wicket was very true."
"So, hopefully we get a better wicket for the next game so that even when we lose the toss, it doesn't play too big a part. [On recovering from 32/4 to 125/7] Yes, definitely. That's one of the positives. Marumani and Madhevere - it's a new role as well. I thought they batted really well to give us some sort of a respectable total."
