As the Hundred league is going through a transition phase since the conclusion of the previous season, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has introduced new rules for sponsorship deals for all of the eight franchises in the league.
ECB has prohibited the franchises from making any deal with betting firms as the board wants to position the upcoming edition of The Hundred league as a family show. The upcoming edition of the tournament is scheduled to start on July 21 with the final match on August 16.
Franchises are dealing with kit sponsorship issues
Ahead of the opening day of the tournament, ECB is in a unique situation as three out of eight franchises are yet to secure their front-of-shirt sponsorship deals. One out of those three teams, which is yet to sign a deal for front-of-shirt sponsorship, is expected to bring a deal on board, while the remaining two are relying on deals from betting firms.
Without permission from the England and Wales Cricket Board, franchises are not allowed to sign any deal with any betting companies. According to a Telegraph report, the ECB has been forced to allow the franchises to join hands with betting companies, breaking their own rules.
ECB allows gambling firms to make deals with The Hundred franchises
However, the franchises that are about to bring gambling companies as their sponsors will have to maintain a different guideline. As per ECB's mandates, franchises are only allowed to sign a deal with a gambling firm for a duration of one year only.
Early last year, the ECB sold stakes in the eight teams in The Hundred, which makes the league a private tournament. So, the national cricket board has no choice but to set the norms according to the situation. Some of the franchises in the Hundred are now owned by the Indian Premier League franchise owners.
One of ECB's spokespersons told Telegraph Sport that due to the transition phase of the tournament, the franchises will have to decide whether to make any deal with a gambling company. If a deal between a gambling company and a The Hundred franchise lands ahead of the upcoming season, then the deal's validity will be for only one year, for the 2026 season.
"Ultimately this is a decision for teams to make, and given the transitional nature of 2026, some teams remained keen to have the option to pursue visible betting partners for this year's competition only. Consensus was therefore reached amongst the teams to permit on-kit betting partnerships in 2026, subject to several strict parameters," the ECB spokesperson said to the media house.
"These parameters only allow teams to pursue a one-year deal for 2026, with teams unanimously agreeing to ban on-kit betting advertising from 2027," he added.
Franchises and the gambling companies will have to maintain some rules
The spokesperson further mentioned that the partnership will have to obey the Code of Conduct on Sponsorship Agreements, which will restrict the gambling companies from printing their logo on fan versions' kits. Players will also have the freedom to decide whether to put on a kit with the sponsorship logo or a kit without a sponsorship logo.
"'In addition, any partnerships must comply with the Code of Conduct on Sponsorship Agreements with Gambling Companies, which includes kits available to purchase for fans without a sponsor logo, restricting any venue activations, and all players being given the option to wear a playing kit that does not feature gambling branding. In addition, a minimum commercial value threshold is in place," it is informed.
