The Ben Stokes-led England team made a brilliant comeback and finished 2-2 in the five-match Ashes series against Australia at home. The England cricket team beat Australia in the fifth and final Test by 49 runs at the Kennington Oval in London on Monday, July 31.

Australia were bowled out for 334 runs while chasing a target of 384 runs. David Warner, Usman Khawaja, and Steve Smith scored half-centuries, but couldn’t convert them into three-digit scores. Stuart Broad took the wicket of Alex Carey on his final delivery of Test cricket.

Speaking after the match, former England skipper Nasser Hussain confirmed that Ricky Ponting missed the flight home to watch the final day of the Ashes series.

“It’s been a perfect series. Great cricket; Test cricket is brilliant for it. Brilliant two test matches for England. Brilliant for Stuart Broad, and Ricky Ponting missed his flight home, so it’s been an excellent day,” Hussain told Sky Sports.

England Beat Australia By 49 Runs

Australia began the final day 135-0 with Usman Khawaja and David Warner at the crease. The hosts picked up three quick wickets early to put the opposition on the back foot. Chris Woakes dismissed Warner and Khawaja, while Mark Wood removed Marnus Labuschagne.

Steve Smith and Travis Head built a crucial 95-run partnership, giving Australia hope. However, England’s bowlers made a strong comeback, taking five wickets for just 30 runs. Alex Carey added a 35-run partnership with Todd Murphy but it wasn’t enough to chase down the target.

Earlier, the Ben Stokes-led team lost the first two games at Edgbaston and Lord’s. England bounced back to win the third match at Headingley. The hosts were in a position to win the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, but the match ended in a draw due to rain on the last day.
