RP Singh expressed astonishment that India chose Shreyas Iyer over the in-form Deepak Hooda for the third ODI against England on Sunday.

Hooda has been in good form, as he was the hero of the Indian team’s trip to Ireland when he hit his first T20I century. He also made an impression in the first T20I of the ongoing series, scoring 33 runs off 17 balls.

However, despite India making four changes for the third ODI, the 27-year-old has failed to crack the starting XI in the previous two games.

Deepak Must Have Played: RP Singh And Parthiv Patel

Singh stated on Cricbuzz’s YouTube channel that he was upset Hooda was not selected for the last match and claimed that he would have picked Hooda ahead of Iyer if he was the captain.

“You must play someone who is in form, Deepak Hooda was in form as he has scored so many runs. But by playing Iyer, you are trying to get him back in his form which is beyond my understanding. If I was the captain, I would have played Deepak Hooda,” said Singh.

Former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel also criticised India’s choice to not choose Hooda. He stated that the consistency displayed by Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma in terms of team selection was not on exhibit today and that Iyer was given the opportunity since he performed well before to the IPL.

“I am really surprised. For some time this Indian team management under Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma had shown some consistency. But that wasn’t on display here today. It is a different thought process and I am a little surprised. Maybe, he (Shreyas) got the opportunity because he had done well before IPL,” Patel said on the Cricbuzz Youtube channel.
