Former England captain Nasser Hussain feels that the newly appointed captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum have taken away the “fear of failure” from the England Test team.

England started off their new era under head coach McCullum and captain Stokes with a win over New Zealand at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, London.

In the second Test against New Zealand at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham England played a different brand of cricket and completed the 299-run chase in 50 overs on the final day of the Test match with the help of Jonny Bairstow’s explosive innings of 136 runs off 92 balls, including 14 impressive fours and 7 amazing sixes.

In his column for The Daily Mail, Hussain stated that the transformation of the England Test team has been rapid and remarkable and he credited Stokes and McCullum for England’s success. He elaborated:

“You can talk the talk, as Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have done since coming together, but it is quite another thing to walk the walk. How England walked it there. They have talked about promoting Test cricket and making people enjoying it.”

“McCullum and Stokes have taken that fear of failure away from the England team. There has been so much doom and gloom around them. The players lost, admittedly largely because of Covid, that love and enjoyment of playing for England. But can you imagine the lack of confidence in that dressing room after defeat by West Indies in Grenada just a few months ago compared to how it must be now? The transformation has been rapid and remarkable.”

Jonny Bairstow has now made three hundreds in his last six Tests – Nasser Hussain

Former England captain mentioned that the explosive batter Bairstow has smashed three centuries in his last 6 Test games. Hussain added that Bairstow has always performed brilliantly whenever he has got a point to prove something. He stated:

“Bairstow has now made three hundreds in his last six Tests but you always feel he is the one having to prove a point. And once he made two low scores at Lord’s, some people were saying ‘get Bairstow out of the side and put Harry Brook in’. That sort of thing drives him on because he always seems a better player when he has that point to prove.”
