Jofra Archer is ready to play his first match for England in over two years after being nominated to a 14-man ODI team for the January tour of South Africa.

The last time Archer participated in an international match was in March 2021 during England’s T20I tour of India, when he was the leading wicket-taker in the team’s ODI World Cup win.

His career has recently been hindered by two injuries: a lower back stress fracture that prevented him from playing the full home summer of 2022 and a long-standing elbow problem that has necessitated two surgeries.

However, he made a promising comeback to the England set-up in the UAE last month, training with the England Lions and playing in a warm-up match against the Test squad, in which he smacked Zak Crawley on the head with a vicious bouncer in the first of his nine overs.

Jofra Archer has been unable to compete due to injury for almost two years:

Archer hailed his return to play against the Test squad as  “a small day but still a big day” after his bowling stint in Abu Dhabi last month, and said he was still in the early stages of his comeback to full fitness.

“I’d rather take these last few months very seriously, more serious than probably all of the rehab, Because once this phase goes right, then it can set me up for the next three to four years injury-free. That’s the goal right now”Jofra Archer said.

Harry Brook will have the potential to earn all of England’s caps during the tour. He was selected for the first time in an ODI squad as a result of his outstanding performance in the most recent Test series in Pakistan, where he amassed 468 runs at 93.60, including three hundred.

The three-game series will take place over the course of six days, with the first game beginning on January 27 in Bloemfontein and the England Test tour of New Zealand beginning the following week.
