The Joe Root-led England Cricket Team not only won the Test as well as the series against Sri Lanka in Galle on Monday but they also proceeded to win the hearts of the cricketing folklore following their heartwarming gesture towards their die-hard fan Rob Lewis following their six-wicket hammering of the hosts.

Apart from Joe Root, who hogged the limelight on the field courtesy of his masterclass in how to play spin bowling in Asian conditions, it was Rob Lewis- an English cricket fanatic and a member of the Barmy Army- who did the same off the field.

For the uninitiated, Rob Lewis had travelled to the island nation in March 2020 for England’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, the series got postponed due to the outbreak of the Wuhan virus, forcing the English team to return home.

However, the postponement of the series did not deter Rob Lewis one bit as he decided to stay back in the island until Joe Root’s men returned to play the series.

His perseverance and patience eventually paid off as England returned to the island earlier this month in feature in the Test series. He belted out England team’s anthem ‘Jerusalem’ from the rampant of the Galle fort on the first morning of the Test match. However, his excitement was short-lived as the local police asked him to vacate the place due to security issues.

However, after a lot of efforts, Rob Lewis finally got an opportunity to watch the game from a different place. His sacrifice did not go in vain as England not only whitewashed  Sri Lanka 2-0 but also proceeded to acknowledge his efforts by waving at him after the completion of the match.

Earlier, England’s captain Joe Root, following the culmination of the first Test, had personally called Rob Lewis to thank him for his relentless support towards the ‘Three Lions’.
