England pacer Mark Wood has been ruled out of the second Test starting from August 28 at Lord's. Olly Stone has been called up as his replacement in the XI.

Earlier after Wood's ruling out was confirmed, Leicestershire pacer Josh Hull was named in the England squad for the second Test.

England won the first Test by five wickets after a spirited performance from Sri Lanka in Manchester.

Joe Root scored an unbeaten 62 to guide England to a five-wicket win in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Contributions from Daniel Lawrence (34), Harry Brook(32), and Jamie Smith (39) took them closer to victory.

Meanwhile, England skipper Ben Stokes stays out of the Test team. A tear in his left hamstring, sustained during The Hundred, has ruled Ben Stokes out for the remainder of the English summer. This means that he will stay out of the second Test against Sri Lanka as well.

Meanwhile, Ollie Pope will continue to lead the team in his absence. He won his first Test as captain in Manchester.

He will now look to win at Lord's and bag a series win. Meanwhile, Ollie Stons will lay his first Test in three years. He played his last Test against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 2021.

England Fourth On WTC Points Table, Sri Lanka Fifth

In the absence of Ben Stokes, Joe Root will continue to be the lead batter in the side. He scored 42 and 62 in the two innings of the Test match.

Sri Lankan bowlers bowled well to him in the two innings and decently restricted the other batters as well.

Speaking about Sri Lanka, they came up with a good performance in the first Test. After getting bowled out for 236 in the first innings, they scored 326 in the second innings.

England scored 358 in the first innings and managed to chase the score down after an early hiccup in the second innings.

Heading into the second Test, England are fourth on the WTC points table and Sri Lanka is fifth. The hosts are on a four-match winning run winning three against West Indies and the first Test against Sri Lanka.

The Lankan on the other hand, lost to Pakistan to start their campaign. Then they won two against Bangladesh and now they have lost to England in the first Test.

Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal though was not too disappointed after the loss saying that they can take a lot of pride from the performance.

'We are over the moon as a team, not for the result but the way we played in this game is unbelievable. In the first half an hour on the first day, we lost three wickets. Milan [Rathnayake] and Dhananjaya batted brilliantly and took us through the game" Chandimal said.

He further credited Asitha Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya for bringing the visitors back into the contest in the first Test. Fernando took six wickets in the first Test while Jayasuriya five.

"When we come to the bowling, Asitha and Prabath have done a tremendous job throughout the innings. So we have a lot of positive stuff so I'm sure we can give a good fight again at Lord's and I'm sure we can win a game here before we go back to Sri Lanka" he added saying.
