England women’s cricket team have announced squads for the upcoming T20I and Test series against India. They play a three-match T20I series followed by a one-off Test between December 6-17, 2023.
Sophie Ecclestone, the England spinner is among the big names to be included in the T20I and the Test squads. She dislocated her right shoulder during last summer’s Women’s Hundred.
England coach Jon Lewis spoke about Ecclestone’s fitness and her return to the side after recovering from her shoulder dislocation. While welcoming her back, the coach is not expecting too much too soon knowing that she will need time to get into her stride.
“She’s the No.1 bowler in the world across both white-ball formats, she’s an obvious standout talent in women’s cricket,” Lewis said. “She’s a really good competitor, she loves winning. So she’s great to have around our side. For the girls to practice against a bowler like that, and for Charlie Dean and Sarah Glenn to pick her brains, and Alice Capsey as well, will be invaluable” said coach Lewis.

He also spoke about Ecclestone’s fitness and that she is slowly but surely getting into her stride. England’s tour and the series overall will be a great preparation for next year’s Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh followed by the Women’s 50-over World Cup in 2025.
“She’s working her way back to fitness. We expect her to be fit to play. However, getting people back to fitness isn’t always a linear experience,” Lewis added. “So we’ll see how she progresses over the next three or four weeks. The medical people are telling me she will be [fit], but my experience tells me that’s not always straightforward. The thing that could be more tricky for her is hitting the ground when she fields” Lewsis added further.
Upcoming pacer Mahika Gaur and Bess Heath are part of the T20I squads. Gaur’s rise especially has been an eye-catching one from playing for UAE to then switching sides and playing for England. Bess meanwhile is part of both the squads.
