England’s limited-overs captain, Eoin Morgan foresees that he will miss his key players who play all three formats in the home T20I series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. On Saturday, England lost the T20I series to India, and Eoin Morgan explained why he won’t be able to field his best eleven for a long time until the T20 World Cup later this year.

The Three Lions will commence their home summer with two Tests against New Zealand, followed by 3-match T20I and ODI series each against Sri Lanka, and then will host Babar Azam’s Pakistan for the same number of limited-overs matches. Their summer will conclude with a crucial 5-match Test series against India. Just before the T20 World Cup, Eoin Morgan is scheduled to lead his team for another T20I series in Pakistan.

It’s just too much to ask: Eoin Morgan

Considering the packed schedule and the bio-bubble effects on the mental and physical health of the players, the ECB rested some of its cricketers on the Test tour to Sri Lanka and India.

Players such as Jos Buttler, Mark Wood, Jofra Archer – who is ruled out of the ODI series against India after aggravating his elbow injury in the T20I series – Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, and Jonny Bairstow play all formats for England, and hence may not be available for the T20I matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. While at the same time, as the skipper points out, it will give ample opportunities to fringe players to make their claims for a place in the World Cup squad.

“I would imagine all of the multi-format guys [will miss those series]. It’s just too much to ask, given the winter guys have had as well, around being in a bubble. A lot of it will be dependent on how flexible it is to come in and out of the bio-secure environment that we’ll have during our summer and whether they can see their families or not,” Eoin Morgan said in the press conference.

“We’ve been lucky with injuries so far but we can’t always have our fast bowlers as fit as we would like them. What we will have throughout the summer is opportunities for guys to stake their claim,” the 2019 World Cup-winning captain added.
