Ex-Sri Lanka captain assassinated in front of his wife and children ahead of India series

Former Sri Lankan Under-19 captain Dhammika Niroshana was assassinated by an unidentified individual outside his home in Ambalangoda on Tuesday, July 16, according to local media. The Sri Lankan Police are currently investigating Dhammika Niroshana's case to identify and apprehend the shooter.

Dhammika Niroshana had a promising cricket career before retiring in 2004. He was known as a fast bowler who occasionally showed batting prowess. Niroshana debuted for Sri Lanka Under-19 in 2000. He led the team in the 2002 U19 World Cup in New Zealand, where he took seven wickets at an average of 19.28.

As per local police, Dhammika Niroshana was shot at home while with his wife and two children. The assailant used a 12-bore firearm to commit the crime. The Ambalangoda police confirmed the presence of his family during the incident. The police are investigating but have not yet identified the shooter or the motive.

Sri Lanka Police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa stated that the investigation is ongoing to apprehend the suspect in the shooting, which appears to be linked to gang rivalry. “Investigations are underway to arrest the suspect involved in the shooting which seemed to be a result of a gang rivalry.”

Reports indicate that Niroshana returned to Sri Lanka only three months ago. He fled the country following the murder of his close friend, Dasun Manawadu. The police are also investigating if there is a connection between Niroshana's murder and the 2016 death of former cricketer and cricket administrator H. Premasiri.

Niroshana didn't get the chance to play for the senior Sri Lanka team, but he shared the field with Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, and Farveez Maharoof at the Under-19 level and in first-class cricket. He played for Chilaw Marians CC, Galle CC, and Singha Sports Club. He scored over 200 runs and took 19 wickets in 12 first-class matches, and amassed 48 runs and took five wickets in eight List-A matches.
