On Thursday West Indies’ limited-overs skipper, Kieron Pollard was in the news recently because of a non-cricketing reason as several YouTube channels claimed the burly all-rounder to have passed away in a car accident! In quick time the rumours, on the internet, spread like a wildfire.
Indeed it was confusing for the fans as on one hand, the netizens remained in shock about – the rumour yet – of the demise of Kieron Pollard, but on the other hand, the West Indian was scheduled to play in the ongoing T10 League in Abu Dhabi.
As it turned out the rumour was, well, just a rumour, and the fake news got cleared as soon as Pollard was seen in the ground leading Deccan Gladiators against Pune Devils.
It is not the first time – and won’t be the last as well – that there have been fake news of celebrities death on the internet. Earlier former India captain, Kapil Dev was also reported to have breathed his last, but he was completely fine; WWE superstar, John Cena was a few years ago to have died in a plane crash – turns out that it was just another social media hoax and Cena was well and fine.
Kieron Pollard skips West Indies tour of Bangladesh; Plays in T10 League
Kieron Pollard, along with several West Indies players, has opted out to tour to Bangladesh citing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. However, the all-rounder is currently playing in the T10 League in Abu Dhabi. Led by Jason Mohammed, West Indies were whitewashed by the hosts in the 3-match ODI series.
The 33-year-old is captaining Deccan Gladiators. His side lost its opening encounter to Pune Devils but have registered their first victory of the tournament on Friday over Team Abu Dhabi.
The Trinidadian is retained by Mumbai Indians for the upcoming 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kieron Pollard has been part of the franchise since 2010 – Pollard and Rohit Sharma are the only two players to have been part of the five IPL final victories for Mumbai Indians. The right-hander smashed 268 runs at a strike rate of 191.42 last season.
