Former India wicketkeeper Abhay Sharma will be applying for the role of India men’s fielding coach position, which will be vacant after the T20 World Cup as current fielding coach, R Sridhar, will be leaving his job.

While head coach Ravi Shastri‘s tenure comes to an end, as he’s ineligible to apply due to his age crossing 60 soon, bowling coach Bharat Arun and Sridhar have also decided not to re-apply.

The BCCI have already put out advertisements inviting application for the role of all the coaches.

Abhay Sharma, who played 89 first-class games and 40 List-A matches, has previously worked with India A, India U-19 and recently the national women’s side. He has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace Sridhar as the fielding coach. The deadline for the application is on November 3.

“He will be applying for the role soon,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Abhay Sharma has previous experience with the men’s side – he was the fielding coach of the team which travelled to Zimbabwe, the USA and West Indies in 2016. He has also been to three U-19 World Cups and has been part of around 10 India A tours.

Recently, he was highly praised for his work by the women side during the England tour before he was replaced for the subsequent tour of Australia.

Abhay Sharma is also one of the coaches at the National Cricket Academy and has worked alongside Rahul Dravid, who is all but confirmed to take over from Ravi Shastri as the next head coach.

According to Cricbuzz, both Bharat Arun and R Sridhar have received offers from IPL franchises as well.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has announced a new position at the NCA – Head Sports Science and Medicine, who will be in charge of all physios, trainers and also nutrition experts in the Indian cricket setup. The creation of the post is part of the NCA up-gradation plan and the newcomer will be singularly responsible for injury management, rehab process and recruitment of personnel.
