Former Indian cricketer and Mumbai captain Sudhir Naik has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai. Sudhir Naik is in an unconscious and critical condition after suffering a fall at his home in Dadar on Friday, March 24.

Sudhir Naik has represented India in three Test matches and two ODIs. The 78-year-old scored 141 runs at an average of 23.50 in the longer format and 38 runs in the 50-over format. He became the first Indian batter to score a boundary in an ODI when he smashed four against England at Leeds in 1974.

“He stays alone after his wife passed away a few years back. I’m going to the hospital to meet him. His daughter and son-in-law are flying to Mumbai tomorrow,” former Mumbai Cricket Association president Ravi Savant, who is a close friend of Naik, told TOI on Tuesday.

Sudhir Naik represented Bombay (now Mumbai) in the Ranji Trophy and scored 4376 runs in 85 matches at an average of 35.29, with 7 hundreds and 27 fifties. The right-handed batter scored 2687 runs for Bombay in 1973–74 at an average of 40.10, with the highest score of 200 not out against Baroda.

Naik led Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy title in 1970, which is one of the biggest achievements in his illustrious first-class career. It was a memorable win with most of the Bombay cricketers on the Indian team during the tour of the West Indies.

Naik produced the biggest stars for India such as Zaheer Khan, Wasim Jaffer and India’s current bowling coach Paras Mhambrey as the owner and coach of the National Cricket Club. He was also the curator of the iconic Wankhede Stadium for several years, including the 2011 World Cup final win against Sri Lanka.
