Former New Zealand Captain Barry Sinclair Passes Away At 85

Former New Zealand National Cricket Team Test captain Barry Sinclair, who played 21 Test matches from 1962–63 to 1967–68, passed away at the age of 85.

Barry Sinclair scored 1148 runs for New Zealand in the 21 Tests he played. He scored his runs at an average of 29.43, including three centuries and three half-centuries. His centuries came against South Africa, Pakistan and England.

Meanwhile, he captained New Zealand three times in his career with his first two appearances as a skipper coming in the same series against England in Dunedin in 1966. His third and last appearance as New Zealand captain came against India in Dunedin.

Also, he was only the third New Zealand batter to cross the 1000 Test runs landmark after Bert Sutcliffe and John Reid.

In the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Barry Sinclair, who was one of New Zealand’s best batsmen in the 1960s, was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

The chief executive of the New Zealand Cricket players’ association Heath Mills said that the demise of Barry Sinclair is a piece of sad news for them and they were blessed to have him involved with the NZCPA for several years.

“We were all very sad to hear of Barry’s passing,” Heath Mills, the chief executive of the New Zealand Cricket players’ association, said. 

“We have been blessed to have him involved with the NZCPA for so many years. Barry was one of the first past players to sign up to our organisation and loved being involved and helping the current players achieve a better environment in the game. We are going to miss him greatly.”

Overall, Barry Sinclair played 188 games in first-class cricket and scored 6114 runs at an average of 32.87, including six centuries and 38 half-centuries. He also played 5 List A games, in which he was able to score 118 runs at an average of 29.50.
