Former Odisha Captain And BCCI Match Referee Prashant Mohapatra Dies Due To Covid-19

Former Odisha cricket team captain Prashant Mohapatra passed away on Wednesday at about 7.51 am due to Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.
He made his Ranji Trophy debut in 1990 against Bihar; he also represented the East Zone in Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy.
Prashant Mohapatra went on to score 2196 first-class runs in 45 matches at an average of 30.08 with 5 hundreds, including a best of 157*, and 11 fifties. In 17 list A games, the right-hander scored 261 runs.
The 47-year-old breathed his last despite all possible efforts by doctors, said the hospital’s superintendent Dr. S N Mohanty. He was put in ventilator support after his condition worsened. A special team of doctors was monitoring his condition at the hospital.

Prashant Mohapatra’s death comes 10 days after his father, Raghunath’s demise. Raghunath, who was a Rajya Sabha MP and Padma Vibhusan awardee, had also succumbed to the Covid-19 on May 9. His brother Jasobant is also admitted to the same facility after he tested positive for the deadly virus.
Popularly known as Munna, Prashant Mohapatra was born on September 1, 1973. He was an opener before making his Ranji debut.
After retirement, the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) had appointed him as a match referee, and he is a level-2 coach as well. He has officiated in 48 first-class matches45 List-A, and 49 T20 games as a referee. He was seen officiating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in March.
Recently, India women cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy had lost her mother and sister due to Covid-19.
India and Mumbai Indians leg-spinner Piyush Chawla lost his father, Pramod Kumar Chawla, to the same virus, so did Rajasthan Royals pacer Chetan Sakariya, whose father Kanjibhai passed away after a battle with the virus.
