Former Sri Lanka And KKR Player Sachithra Senanayake Has Been Arrested By Police On Charges Of Match-Fixing - Report

Former Sri Lanka and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) player, Sachithra Senanayake was arrested on Wednesday (September 6th) over match-fixing allegations.

Sports Corruption Investigation Unit arrested the 38-year-old player on Wednesday morning after the player surrendered. A few weeks back Sachithra Senanayake was barred from travelling to foreign soil by the court. In the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2020, Sachithra Senanayake was accused of fixing a match where he tempted two players to fix games.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court ordered a travel ban was imposed on Senanayake which will stay for three months.

As per reports, the Colombo court was told that the Attorney General’s Department was advised by the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry to frame criminal charges against the 38-year-old.

Did Sachithra Senanayake have an average international career?

Sachithra Senanayake made his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013 for the Kolkata-based franchise and played only eight matches and took nine wickets with an average of 23.22.

Senanayake played his first international game in the ODI format in 2012 against South Africa and featured in 49 games where he picked up 53 wickets. In the T20I format, he played 24 matches and scalped 25 wickets.

The island country won the toss and opted to bat first. In the first inning, Sri Lanka gave a target of 291 runs after Kusal Mendis played a stellar 92-run knock from 84 balls with a strike rate of 109.52.

In the second inning, Kasun Rajitha led the Sri Lankan bowling attack scalped four wickets in his 10-over spell, and gave away 79 runs. Star pacer, Matheesha Pathirana managed only to take one wicket in his 10-over spell and gave away 63 runs.

In the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2023, Sri Lanka will take on Bangladesh on Saturday (September 9th) at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Following this they will lock horns against India in the fourth Super Fours match on Tuesday (September 12th) in Colombo.

Sri Lanka will start their ODI World Cup 2023 journey against South Africa on October 7th at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
