Mumbai Indians (MI) under their new skipper Hardik Pandya finished last in IPL 2024. They won just four games this season with Hardik getting enough criticism for the way he led the team.
Hardik's appointment as captain before the start of the season surprised every Mumbai Indians and India cricket team fan. It felt like the decision was taken in a hurry as the team looked forward to a new and young captain keeping in mind the future.
Meanwhile, India won the T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma and with Hardik being his deputy. Now with franchis preparing for the IPL 2025 mega auctions Mumbai Indians like every other franchise are identifying players whom they can retain and release.
The meeting between the IPL franchises and the BCCI took place on July 31. The franchise owners came up with several suggestions with the number of retentions being one of them. There was a lot of attention paid to that subject.
The BCCI said that they will decide by the end of the month keeping all the franchies on the edge. Meanwhile, in this article, we take a look at three Indian players MI might release ahead of IPL 2025.
Speaking about Mumbai Indians, they finished tenth on the points table and relied heavily on individual performances rather than a complete team effort. They won just four games and lost 10 including two defeats against KKR and one against CSK.
They also lack quality spin attacks. Piyush Chawla is the only experienced spinner in the side. He is nearing 40 and might not be in MI's plans for the next phase of the tournament. Hence strengthening the spin attack should be their biggest concern in the mega auction.
Indian Players Mumbai Indians Will Release Ahead Of IPL 2025 Mega Auction
Shreyas Gopal
Gopal the leggie played just three matches for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. He picked up three wickets and was benched for the rest of the games. He has played for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad as well apart from MI.
All teams have used him sparingly. His best season in the IPL came in 2019 when he took 20 wickets while playing for the Royals.
Arjun Tendulkar
The retention rules coupled with the management's decisions might also see Arjun Tendulkar being released. However, it is almost a given that he will be taken back by the Mumbai Indians franchise even if he is released.
He played just one match this year against the Lucknow Super Giants where he went for 22 runs in less than three overs. It will be interesting to see the management's decision on him.
Vishnu Vinod
The keeper-batter was ruled out of IPL 2024 with an injury on his forearm. MI then roped in Saurashtra wicket-keeper batter Harvik Desai as a replacement.
However, he too did not get to play any games this season. The Kerala cricketer is good in domestic cricket but having missed the season for Mumbai Indians they might eventually release him at the mega auction.
