India’s newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has confirmed the addition of Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches to the coaching staff of the Indian Cricket Team ahead of their upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka.

Gambhir confirmed his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) colleagues Nayar and ten Doeschate’s appointments as assistant coaches of Team India during his first press conference on Monday, July 22, since replacing Rahul Dravid as the head coach.

Nayar, a seasoned domestic cricket stalwart, and ten Doeschate, a former Netherlands all-rounder with a wealth of experience in various T20 leagues, bring diverse expertise to the Indian coaching staff. Notably, both Nayar and ten Doeschate have previously worked with Gambhir at KKR.

In addition to Nayar and ten Doeschate, Team India’s fielding coach T Dilip, and NCA coach Sairaj Bahutule will also be part of India’s coaching staff on their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Expressing confidence in the newly formed support staff, Gambhir revealed that he got positive feedback from the Indian players about the new coaching staff.

The new head coach also hopes that the blend of experience, tactical acumen, and fresh perspectives will create a winning formula for the Men in Blue. His first assignment as India’s head coach will be the upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka, starting on July 27.

Hopefully, we can have a successful tenure as coaches: Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir said at the press conference in Mumbai: “Really happy with the BCCI. They have agreed with most of the things I have asked for. The crux of the support staff will remain what it is right now, but we will finalise it once the Sri Lanka tour is over. Yes, Abhishek is the assistant coach, and Ryan ten Doeschate is also the assistant coach.

I personally feel there can be assistant coaches who can probably involve themselves more in all three departments rather than just focusing on one, and that is the reason why now we have two assistant coaches as well. And that is the way we go forward, and yes, you will get to know the exact support staff once the Sri Lanka tour is over.”

Gambhir confirmed that former Indian fielding coach T. Dilip and former Indian spinner Sairaj Bahutule will accompany the Indian cricket team to Sri Lanka as part of the support staff for the upcoming white-ball series when he was asked about the coaching staff for the upcoming series.

The new head coach added, “Abhishek Nayar is there, Sairaj Bahutule is there, Dilip is there, and Ryan ten Doeschate is going to join in Colombo.” It is being said that former South African pacer Morne Morkel is likely to be named as India’s new bowling coach after the upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka.

Notably, Gambhir's first assignment as India's head coach will begin with the first T20I against Sri Lanka on July 27, while the three-match ODI series will kick off on August 2.
