Gautam Gambhir exposes Yashasvi Jaiswal’s weakness despite century in Visakhapatnam ODI

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir showered praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal following his century in the third and final ODI match against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, December 6. Gambhir also said that Jaiswal has great potential but must learn how to control his tempo in the 50-over format.
Jaiswal entered the third ODI under pressure after low scores in the first two matches. However, the young opener batted with patience early on and went on to score an unbeaten 116 off 121 balls, including 12 boundaries and two sixes. India won by nine wickets with more than 10 overs left, sealing the series 2-1.
It’s Just the Start of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Career - Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir said that he was pleased with how Yashasvi Jaiswal paced his innings in the match. Gambhir stated that ODIs don’t always demand all-out aggression. He added that once Jaiswal learns the right tempo for different phases of a 50-over game, he will reach the top level.
“We’ve seen how much quality he (Jaiswal) has, especially what he does in Test cricket. It’s just the start of his career, especially in white-ball cricket. He has a massive future ahead,” Gambhir said.
“In ODIs, you don’t have to play aggressively because if you split the format into 30 and 20 overs, things will be very easy. He was playing just his fourth game. The moment he figures out which tempo he has to bat in the 50 over format, sky is the limit for him,” he added.
I Don’t Give Excuses in Press Conferences - Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir hit back at critics who targeted him after India’s Test series defeat in South Africa. He pointed out that many people ignored key facts, including the absence of Shubman Gill in the first Test, where the margin was only 30 runs.
“There’s been a lot of talk because the results didn’t go in our favour (in the Test series). No media has written that our first Test match was without the captain, who didn’t bat in both innings. And the difference was 30 runs. Because I don’t give excuses in press conferences, it doesn’t mean that you don’t show the facts to the world or to the country,” Gambhir said.
“People also said things that have nothing to do with cricket. An IPL owner also wrote about split coaching. It’s very important for people to stay in their domain. Because if we don’t go into someone’s domain, then they also don’t have any right to come into our domain.”
Yashasvi Jaiswal Slams Maiden ODI Century
South Africa scored 270 before being bowled out in 47.5 overs. Quinton de Kock was the best performer with 106 runs, while Temba Bavuma and Dewald Brevis added useful runs in the middle. For India, Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna took four wickets each.
India’s chase was completely one-sided. Yashasvi Jaiswal reached his maiden ODI hundred off 111 balls. He scored an unbeaten 116 from 121 deliveries, guiding India to 271/1 in just 39.5 overs. Rohit Sharma added 75, and Virat Kohli remained not out on 65.
Jaiswal had scored only 40 runs in the first two matches and was under pressure due to competition for places. With this knock, he became only the sixth Indian to score centuries in all three formats. He now has nine international hundreds across formats.
