Glenn Maxwell, on Tuesday (November 7), played arguably the greatest ODI knock of all time to power Australia to a miraculous win over Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Australia, who have struggled to do well while chasing in recent months, were looking set to suffer their first-ever defeat against Afghanistan. Set a target of 292 runs, the five-time world champions were reeling at 91 for 7. With Glenn Maxwell being the only recognized batter left, the match looked as good as over for Australia.

However, the hard-hitting middle-order batter had other ideas. He came up with a sensational knock to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat for his side. Glenn Maxwell battled through a back injury and various cramps to take his team home in sensational fashion.

The Australia star played a sensational knock of 201 runs to help his team win the game by 3 wickets. His knock came off just 128 balls and was studded with 21 fours and 10 sixes. He shared an unbeaten stand of 202 runs with captain Pat Cummins who scored just 12 runs off 68 balls during the mammoth partnership.

Towards the end of the innings, Glenn Maxwell could not run at all and relied only on boundaries. In the 47th over, he hit spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman for three sixes and a four to complete his double century and take his team to win. And his heroic knock made his wife Vini Raman emotional.

She was in the stands to cheer her husband and could not have asked for a better performance. Soon after the game ended, she posted a story on Instagram, writing: “All the emotions”.

During the knock, Maxwell broke a plethora of records. His double-century is the first-ever ODI double-century from a team batting second and is also the first ever by a batsman who was not opening the innings. He also became the first Australian male cricketer to score a double century in the 50-over format.
