Young India batter Dhruv Jurel revealed that England white-ball captain Jos Buttler sent him a message after he received his India call-up for the Test series against England. The batter also said that he wants to develop mental fortitude with international experience.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the squad for the first two Tests against England. One of the names that caught the attention of many was Dhruv Jurel’s. The keeper-batter received his maiden call-up for the team that too in the big series.

Dhruv Jurel made it into the team on the back of stellar domestic performances. He broke into the scene during the U19 World Cup 2020 and after that made a great contribution for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, which saw him making a name.

Dhruv Jurel displayed a great performance in the FC games as well. In the 15 games, he has had one century and five half-centuries to his name at an impressive average of 46.47 with the bat.

On receiving the India call-up, Dhruv Jurel’s Rajasthan Royals teammate Jos Buttler was among the ones who were delighted. The young batter revealed that England’s white-ball captain was happy to see him making it into the Indian team. He also revealed that Yashasvi Jaiswal was the first person to text him after the India call-up. Speaking to RR, he stated:

“Yashasvi and I go a long way back. We played together in our U19 days and it has always been a lot of fun. I am looking forward to sharing this experience with him too. He was one of the first ones to text me and congratulate, saying ‘Well-deserved bhai, very happy for you’.”

“I also got a text from Jos [Buttler] bhai, he said ‘Good to see you in the Indian team, long way to go.”

Dhruv Jurel wants to develop mental fortitude with international experience

Rajasthan Royals after Dhruv Jurel further talked about the things that he wants to learn from the India vs England series. He believes that many young players aren’t able to sustain themselves at the highest level but he doesn’t want to be one of them.

He added that he wants to learn from the senior players how on bad days one can keep oneself up. He concluded by saying that he would do his best to absorb all the pressure. He explained:

“The most important learning that I’d want to take away from this series is how to develop the mental fortitude that is needed to survive at the highest level. A lot of players get call-ups, but only a few can sustain themselves.

Once you’re in the public eye on a much bigger stage, you are constantly judged on your performances. So I really want to know how these players deal with bad days, how they face criticism and pressure. I am going to try and absorb it all.”

With KL Rahul unlikely to keep wickets in the Test series, the way to get an India cap for Dhruv Jurel becomes slightly easy. India also has KS Bharat as a keeper in the team but of late team hasn’t shown interest in him. Therefore it won’t be a surprise if Jurel ends up debuting in the first game. The series between India and England will kick start on 25th January in Hyderabad and will end in March 2024.
