David Warner, on Thursday (December 14), smashed a stunning century in the ongoing first Test between Australia and Pakistan in Perth to give a fitting reply to his critics.
As the veteran opener geared up to play his final Test series for Australia, he battled a huge controversy. His position in Australia’s Test team became a subject of public debate after Mitchell Johnson launched a scathing attack on him.
The former Australia pacer wrote in his newspaper column that David Warner did not deserve the herp’s farewell because of his involvement in the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal as well as his poor form in Tests in recent times. David Warner’s former opening partner Ed Cowan had also questioned his spot in the Test team because of his poor form.
“Does this really warrant a swansong, a last hurrah against Pakistan that was forecast a year in advance as if he was bigger than the game and the Australian cricket team?” Mitchell Johnson had said about David Warner.
“It’s been five years and Warner has still never really owned the ball-tampering scandal. Now the way he is going out is underpinned by more of the same arrogance and disrespect to our country,” he added.
David Warner scores stunning century:
As he has done throughout his illustrious career, David Warner once again let his bat do the talking as he responded to the harsh criticism in style. The southpaw came out all guns blazing after Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first. He led Australia’s charge with the bat in the first session, sharing a century-plus stand with Usman Khawaja for the first wicket.
David Warner reached his fifty in just 41 balls after smashing Faheem Ashraf for three fours in an over. At the time of lunch, he was batting on 72 runs off just 67 balls as Australia finished the session on 117 for no loss in just 25 overs. He slowed down a bit after lunch but eventually reached his century off 125 balls. It is only his second century since January 2020 and his first since December last year.
