Greg Chappell, a former leader of Australia, has added his voice to the requests for the relaxation of the prohibition on David Warner serving in an official leadership capacity in Australian cricket.
Due to his key role in the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering controversy, batsman Warner was permanently disqualified from holding any leadership positions in the Australian game.
David Warner and Steve Smith, the Test vice-captain, and captain at the time of the ball-tampering scene, were both suspended from playing top cricket for a year.
Before the 2021–22 Ashes series, Smith was named the test team’s deputy captain and was only given a one-year leadership role suspension.
Warner was an “excellent” leader for the team, but Cricket Australia’s CEO Nick Hockley stated last week that there were no intentions to lift the suspension despite Warner’s leadership.

Pat Cummins, the current Test captain, is one of many who has advocated for the Cricket Australia ban to be lifted, stating that he “fundamentally” disagrees with the idea of a prohibition that ignores the fact that people can grow and develop.
Chappell said to Fox Sports News on Tuesday, “He played a significant role in what transpired, but he was not the only one that was engaged and I do not know why he should be treated any differently.”
“He has received his penalty, he is a good team leader, and if given the chance, I do not doubt that he would have led the team admirably as captain.”
“I believe he has served his punishment, so let us make room for leadership positions.”
